Jinn

Despite OK visual effects, a few chills and some newfangled movie monsters, writer-director Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad’s supernatural thriller “Jinn” often feels like one-half of an old grindhouse double bill.  It’s a watchable if rather convoluted effort.

The titular jinn, according to Eastern mythology, are one of three races created “In the beginning…” (the other two are man and angels).  Conveniently--for a horror film, anyway--the mysterious jinn are nothing if not flexible.  These time- and shape-shifting beings can be good or bad, peaceful or violent, invisible or in your face (at times they resemble upright fireplaces).  Whatever, you want them on your side.

Unfortunately for Shawn (Dominic Rains), a model-handsome Michigan auto designer married to the equally pretty Jasmine (Serinda Swan), he must suddenly do battle with a vicious sect of the jinn, the Shayateen, due to a family curse that stretches back to 1901.  Suffice to say this ancestral history is news to Shawn and it’s delivered the old-fashioned way: on a VHS tape.

What follows is a frantic few days in which Shawn must collaborate with an unlikely trio of jinn experts--a shadowy priest (William Atherton), a protective tough guy (Ray Park) and a manacled mental patient (Faran Tahir)--to learn how to fight the fiery Shayateen at their own miserable game and, y’know, save the world.  This demands that, among other things, Shawn pass an ancient ritualistic test called the Chillah (don’t ask).

Meanwhile, Jasmine, who may or may not be pregnant with Shawn’s child, has allegedly been abducted by the bad jinn. Cue the stacked deck.

Magical swords, evil doppelgangers, a sexy black muscle car, an unremarkable final showdown and lots of first-draft dialogue factor into this thankfully brief (about 80 minutes plus end credits) frightfest. 

As for the film’s closing promise: “The Jinn will return”--don’t hold your breath.

Jinn (Perancis)

Malgré effets visuels OK, quelques frissons et quelques monstres de cinéma dernier cri, thriller surnaturel de scénariste-réalisateur Ajmal Zaheer Ahmad "Jinn" se sent souvent comme une moitié d'un vieux projet de loi double Grindhouse. Ce est un effort regardable si plutôt alambiquée.

Le titulaire djinns, selon la mythologie orientale, sont l'une des trois courses créées «Au commencement ...» (les deux autres sont l'homme et des anges). Idéalement - pour un film d'horreur, de toute façon - les djinns mystérieuse ne sont rien si ce ne est flexible. Ces êtres temps et de forme changeante peut être bon ou mauvais, pacifique ou violente, invisible ou dans votre visage (parfois ils ressemblent cheminées verticales). Quoi, vous voulez de votre côté.

Malheureusement pour Shawn (Dominic Rains), un concepteur automobile du Michigan modèle beau marié à la non moins jolie Jasmine (Serinda Swan), il doit soudain faire la bataille avec une secte vicieux de djinns, le shayateen, en raison d'une malédiction familiale qui remonte à 1901. Autant dire cette histoire ancestrale est nouvelles à Shawn et il est livré l'ancienne manière: sur une cassette VHS. Ce qui suit est quelques jours frénétiques dans lequel Shawn doit collaborer avec un trio improbable d'experts djinns - un prêtre ombre (William Atherton), un gars de protection extrêmement résistant (Ray Park) et un malade mental menotté (Faran Tahir)--pour apprendre comment combattre l'shayateen feu à leur propre jeu misérable et, tu sais, sauver le monde. Cela exige que, entre autres choses, Shawn passer une ancienne épreuve rituelle appelée Chillah (ne demandez pas).

Pendant ce temps, Jasmine, qui peuvent ou peuvent ne pas être enceinte avec l'enfant de Shawn, a prétendument été enlevé par le mauvais djinns. Calez le pont empilés. Épées magiques, doppelgangers mal, sexy voiture de muscle noir, une épreuve de force finale banal et beaucoup de premier projet de facteur de dialogue dans cette heureusement brève (environ 80 minutes plus générique de fin) FrightFest. Comme pour la fermeture de la promesse du film: "Le Jinn reviendra" - ne retenez pas votre souffle.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

“So began a battle that none had expected,” wrote JRR Tolkien in the third-from-last chapter of The Hobbit. “And it was called The Battle of the Five Armies, and it was very terrible.” Peter Jackson’s expansion of this epochal but barely-described fracas, in his third and final film from this slim book, is neither very terrible nor remotely unexpected. It’s a series of stomping footnotes in search of a climax.






In terms of story so far, it ends virtually when it starts – with super-peeved dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch) raining down fiery destruction on the pitiful residents of Laketown, and facing the last-ditch heroism of an archer called Bard (Luke Evans). Everything else is scraps, in both senses. Jackson’s one recourse is to ape the here-we-go-again war mania of The Return of the King. Humans, dwarves and elves duke it out with orcs and wild wolves. It's a whopping great grudge match, a squabble over the contents of Smaug’s mountain lair, and goodness knows what else. The trouble is that Jackson can’t make it mean very much: when every life on Middle Earth is seemingly at stake, few individually grab our attention. There’s more aftermath than plot left, and very little of it has to do with Bilbo (Martin Freeman), who feels increasingly like a forlorn bystander in his own franchise. The further and more competently the movie trundles on, the more it begs not to exist, really: hindsight favours a two-part adaptation at most. This isn’t to say there aren’t bright spots. However it was fudged, 92-year-old Christopher Lee doing Shaolin kung fu with his magic staff is great value. And the last third is rescued by one meaty, entertaining set piece – crumbling citadel, frozen lake, one-on-one duels between orcs and the principal cast. Freeman, and Evangeline Lilly as the not-in-Tolkien elf maiden Tauriel, inject some unforced pathos which puts many of their dewy-eyed co-stars to shame. The bloom has come off Orlando, though, whose main achievement as Legolas – other than some ridiculous mid-air running up collapsing masonry – is to illustrate perfectly what Joey Tribbiani from Friends called “smell the fart acting”. When the dwarf leader Thorin (Richard Armitage) imagines himself drowning in a pool of molten gold, Jackson’s pet message that Greed Is Bad rings out again – but you have to wonder if a triple-your-money release strategy is quite the seemliest context to preach it in. At 6ft 2", Armitage must be the tallest actor ever to play a dwarf. Le Hobbit : La Bataille des Cinq Armées (Perancis)

"Alors a commencé une bataille qu'aucun ne avait prévu," a écrit JRR Tolkien dans le troisième-from-dernier chapitre de The Hobbit. "Et il a été appelé La Bataille des Cinq Armées, et ce était terrible." Le plus loin et avec plus de compétence le film cahote sur, plus il supplie de ne pas exister, vraiment: recul favorise une adaptation en deux parties au plus. Cela ne veut pas dire qu'il n'y a pas d'emplacements brillants. Toutefois, il a été trafiqué, 92 ans Christopher Lee faisant kung fu de Shaolin avec son bâton magique est une grande valeur. Et le dernier tiers est sauvé par une viande, divertissant jeu pièce - citadelle en ruine, lac gelé, en tête-à-une duels entre orcs et la distribution principale. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1

The biggest problem with the new Hunger Games movie is right there in the title: Part 1. Mockingjay, the final installment in Suzanne Collins’ best-selling YA trilogy, wasn’t conceived in two parts. That was a decision made in Hollywood by a studio looking to double down and milk every last dime out of its blockbuster franchise. The suits probably thought, ”Hey, it worked for Harry Potter and Twilight, so why not us?” You can’t blame them for wanting to keep the good times rolling. But it’s a pretty cynical business plan, and it’s led to a film that feels needlessly padded. Mockingjay—Part 1 is like a term paper with the margins enlarged and the font size jacked up to reach the assigned number of pages.






This is especially disappointing because the previous chapter, 2013’s Catching Fire, was such a pleasant surprise. While the 2012 original laid out Collins’ dystopian death-sport milieu with flair and faithfulness, it was also a bit flat. Catching Fire, on the other hand, gave the heroine, Katniss Everdeen, an adrenalized urgency. As played by Jennifer Lawrence, Katniss developed into a character who was both brainy and badass. Now, in Mockingjay—Part 1, she’s become passive. The movie picks up after the incendiary conclusion of Catching Fire’s Quarter Quell, when Katniss was rescued and brought to the rebels’ underground fortress in District 13. Here, the anti-Capitol leaders plot their next strike against President Snow (Donald Sutherland), hatching a plan to turn Katniss into the fiery symbol of the resistance and spur the powerless citizens of Panem to rise up against the Capitol. It’s a propaganda war, and she’s the secret weapon—a Che Guevara T-shirt made flesh. The rebel brain trust includes President Coin (Julianne Moore, sporting silver Cruella De Vil locks), spin-savvy strategist Plutarch (Philip Seymour Hoffman, to whom the film is dedicated), hacker Beetee (Jeffrey Wright), the newly clean and sober Haymitch (Woody Harrelson), and Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks, channeling a drag queen). They send Katniss and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) to the front lines with a guerrilla film crew that records her battlefield heroics and beams it all back to the huddled masses.



But Snow has a secret weapon of his own. Kidnapped by the nefarious president’s forces at the end of the last movie, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) reappears in the Capitol, and in a series of interviews with the sensationalist journalist Caesar (Stanley Tucci), he denounces Katniss and urges a cease-fire. The betrayal devastates her, forcing her to realize that her feelings for him weren’t a charade after all. With its Wag the Dog subplot and fist-in-the-air proletarianism, Mockingjay may be the most harmlessly Marxist movie to come out of Hollywood since Reds.



I suppose director Francis Lawrence and writers Peter Craig and Danny Strong deserve some credit for daring to sneak any political cheekiness into a movie that’s as big and corporate as this. But overall their hands are tied too tightly. While the series’ first two films captured the grandeur of the outdoors during the kill-or-be-killed competitions, Mockingjay is mostly bound to the bleak and claustrophobic bowels of a bunker. It suffocates the film. And when the story finally does manage to get interesting toward the end, it just screeches to a halt and cuts off, leaving fans wriggling on the hook for a finale they won’t get to see for another 12 months. That’s not a cliff-hanger, that’s just a tease.

Hunger Games: La Révolte - Partie 1 (Perancis)

Le plus gros problème avec le nouveau film Hunger Games est là, dans le titre: Partie 1. Mockingjay, la dernière tranche de best-seller de la trilogie de Suzanne Collins YA, n'a pas été conçu en deux parties. Ce était une décision prise à Hollywood par un studio cherche à doubler et le lait chaque dernier centime sur sa franchise blockbuster. Les costumes ont probablement pensé, "Hey, il a travaillé pour Harry Potter et Twilight, alors pourquoi pas nous?" Vous ne pouvez pas les blâmer de vouloir garder les bons moments roulant. Mais ce est un plan d'affaires assez cynique, et il est conduit à un film qui se sent inutilement rembourré. La Révolte, partie 1 est comme un papier à court terme avec les marges agrandies et la taille de police haussé pour atteindre le numéro attribué de pages.







Ce est particulièrement décevant parce que le chapitre précédent, L'Embrasement de 2013, était une agréable surprise. Alors que l'original 2012 aménagé dystopique milieu mort de sport Collins avec flair et la fidélité, il était aussi un peu plat. Catching Fire, d'autre part, a donné l'héroïne, Katniss, une urgence adrenalized. Enlevé par les forces du président néfaste à la fin du dernier film, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) réapparaît dans le Capitole, et dans une série d'entretiens avec le journaliste sensationnaliste César (Stanley Tucci), il dénonce Katniss et demande instamment un cessez-le-feu. La trahison de son ravage, la forçant à se rendre compte que ses sentiments pour lui ne étaient pas une mascarade après tout. Avec son intrigue secondaire Des Hommes d'Influence et prolétarisation poing en l'air, Mockingjay peut être le film le plus inoffensive Marxist de sortir de Hollywood depuis Reds.



Je suppose que réalisateur Francis Lawrence et écrivains Peter Craig et Danny Strong méritent un certain crédit pour avoir osé se faufiler toute impertinence politique dans un film qui est aussi grand et d'entreprise de ce genre. Mais dans l'ensemble leurs mains sont trop serrés. Alors que les deux premiers films de la série ont capturé la grandeur de l'extérieur pendant les compétitions kill-ou-être-tué, Mockingjay est surtout lié à des entrailles sombres et claustrophobes d'un bunker. Il étouffe le film. Et quand l'histoire ne parvient enfin à devenir intéressant vers la fin, il hurle juste pour une halte et coupe, laissant les fans frétillent sur le crochet pour une finale qu'ils ne obtiendront pas de voir pendant encore 12 mois. Ce ne est pas un cliff-hanger, ce est juste une allumeuse.

Everything has its time, we're told in Ecclesiastes. And for planet Earth, it's time for death.

Not that you'd know it from a cursory glance. In fact, most folks hope the old girl is on the road to recovery decades after an environmental cataclysm wiped out most of the globe's food supply. Now, severely depopulated and humbled, we're getting back to the basics: growing food, maintaining shelter, spending time with family. A few of us might even take in a ball game on a lazy afternoon. But a nitrogen-eating blight is again cutting down crops, one by one. Wheat, rice, okra ... nothing survives the disease these days except corn, and that may not last much longer. Massive dust storms sweep across the land, choking out light and life alike. And even as people push through day by day, it seems society has lost something critical: it's desire to explore, to search for something better. "We used to look up in the sky and wonder at our place in the stars," former astronaut Cooper says. "Now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt." And that place in the dirt for Coop means scraping together a living as a farmer instead of continuing his career as an astronaut. It means having to deal with his high-tech combines taking off in their directions instead of doing what he's programmed them to do. And listening to his 10-year-old daughter, Murphy, saying there's a ghost in her room. Then, when a dust storm blows through Murph's open window, it seems the grime has made strange patterns on the floor ... as if it—the dirt itself—was trying to tell them something. It is, actually. And Coop discovers the dusty lines are binary code that, when translated, become coordinates on a map. When he and Murph go there, they find a massive, secret science facility—perhaps humanity's last real hope. The scientists and engineers who work there, led by Coop's old NASA associate Dr. Brand, have found a mysterious wormhole near Saturn that leads to a new galaxy. They've already sent a dozen intrepid scientists through the hole and to some promising planets beyond, but they need another ship to now shoot through, retrieve data from the 12 and return home with it. And, Brand tells Coop, they could sure use a good pilot to fly the thing. If all goes well and the theory of relatively works as it ought, he could get back home in, oh, a few decades or so—looking no worse for wear and ready to save whatever's left of humanity. If not ... well, Coop should give Murph an extra-long hug goodbye.

Non pas que vous sauriez à partir d'un simple coup d'oeil. En fait, la plupart des gens espèrent que la jeune fille est sur la route à des décennies de récupération après une cataclysme environnemental effacé la plupart de l'approvisionnement alimentaire de la planète. Maintenant, fortement dépeuplé et humilié, nous revenons à l'essentiel: la nourriture de plus en plus, l'entretien des refuges, passer du temps avec la famille. Quelques-uns d'entre nous pourrait même assister à un match de balle sur un après-midi. Mais un fléau manger azote est de nouveau en train d'abattre des cultures, un par un. Blé, le riz, le gombo ... rien ne survit la maladie ces jours sauf le maïs, et que ne peut pas durer beaucoup plus longtemps. Les tempêtes de poussière massives balaient la terre, l'étouffement de la lumière et de la vie même. Et même que les gens poussent travers de jour en jour, il semble la société a perdu quelque chose de critique: ce est le désir d'explorer, à la recherche de quelque chose de mieux. "Nous avons utilisé pour consulter dans le ciel et demandons à notre place dans les étoiles», dit l'ancien astronaute Cooper. "Maintenant, nous avons juste regarder vers le bas et l'inquiétude sur notre place dans la saleté." Et cet endroit dans la saleté pour Coop signifie gratter ensemble une vie comme un agriculteur au lieu de continuer sa carrière d'astronaute. Cela signifie avoir à traiter avec ses moissonneuses-batteuses high-tech décoller dans leurs directions au lieu de faire ce qu'il est programmé pour les faire. Et l'écoute de sa fille de 10 ans, Murphy, disant qu'il ya un fantôme dans sa chambre. Puis, quand une tempête de poussière souffle à travers la fenêtre ouverte de Murph, il semble que la saleté a fait motifs étranges sur le sol ... comme si elle-même la saleté-essayait de leur dire quelque chose. Ce est, en fait. Et Coop découvre les lignes sont poussiéreux code binaire qui, une fois traduit, devenir coordonnées sur une carte. Quand lui et Murph y aller, ils trouvent un massif, science secrète installation peut-être le dernier espoir de l'humanité réelle. Les scientifiques et les ingénieurs qui y travaillent, dirigée par la NASA ancien associé de M. Brand Coop, ont trouvé un trou de ver mystérieuse près de Saturne qui mène à une nouvelle galaxie. Ils ont déjà envoyé une douzaine de scientifiques intrépides à travers le trou et de certaines planètes prometteuses au-delà, mais ils ont besoin d'un autre navire de tirer maintenant à travers, récupérer les données de la 12 et de retourner à la maison avec elle. Et, marque Coop dit, ils pourraient vous utiliser un bon pilote de voler la chose. Si tout va bien et la théorie relativement fonctionne comme il se doit, il pourrait rentrer à la maison en, oh, quelques décennies ou si l'avenir ne est pas pire pour l'usure et prêt à sauver ce qui reste de l'humanité. Sinon ... eh bien, Coop devrait donner un câlin Murph revoir extra-long.

Cinderella

Synopsis

Many a fairy tale concludes with, "And they lived happily ever after." Fewer begin from such a place. But for Ella, life was indeed enchanted.

 

Growing up in a sprawling country mansion, her days consist of communicating with her animal friends (especially four mice living in the house) and basking in the delight of her doting parents. But then Ella's mother falls mortally ill. On her death bed, she beckons Ella close to tell her "a great secret that will see you through all the trials life has to offer: Have courage and be kind."  

As the years roll by, Ella and her father, a merchant, make a good effort to enjoy life together. But melancholy fills his heart, a longing for companionship. And so, when he meets a beautiful widow with two daughters about Ella's age, it seems a perfect opportunity for a second chapter of familial bliss. Except that it isn't. You already know that Lady Tremaine is as cruel as her daughters are vain. And when Ella's father dies on a journey, the teen girl is left with little more in this world than the concepts of courage and kindness her mother bequeathed to her. And the previously unhoped-for love of a charming prince, of course!

Parents Reviews

Parents need to know that this non-musical take on Cinderella is true to the classic Disney animated tale, if somewhat more intense given that it's live action instead of a cartoon. As a child, Cinderella (Downton Abbey's Lily James) loses her mother; her father dies when she's older. Both are drawn-out scenes filled with tears and intense sadness, which could upset younger kids. 

The prince's father also dies, and Cinderella is a beautiful, kind, and dutiful young woman (albeit one with an unreailstically tiny, corset-cinched waist) who's left to suffer at the hands of her evil stepmother (the divine Cate Blanchett). 

Everything about the film is visually stunning -- from the sets to the costumes to the actors -- and being a courageous, kind person is a constant theme. But the prince is transfixed by Cinderella after meeting her just once, and she has no future until he comes and rescues her. The stepmother's cruelty and neglect toward Cinderella could scare some kids. There's a little mild language ("stupid," "shut up") and some background drinking at a party.
